Councilmember Sandra Ung and recently appointed Department of Small Business Services (SBS) Commissioner Dynishal Gross visited Murray Hill on Wednesday afternoon to discuss issues facing the largely immigrant-owned small business community there. Joining them was Ahyoung Kim, director of Economic Empowerment for the Asian American Federation (AAF).

“Murray Hill is a neighborhood that has flourished over the past two decades, thanks in large part to the hardworking Korean immigrant community that has built a vibrant and thriving business district,” said Councilmember Sandra Ung.

Councilmember Sandra Ung met with representatives from the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) and New York Police Department (NYPD) in downtown Flushing on Thursday afternoon to discuss the need for ongoing enforcement of unlicensed vendors. 

Beginning at the intersection of 38th Avenue and Main Street, the group walked south on Main Street with a slight detour to Municipal Lot #2 on 39th Avenue, where they inspected one of the many locations where unlicensed fruit vendors store their produce on public property.

During Thursday’s Stated Meeting of the New York City Council, Councilmember Sandra Ung introduced legislation that would prohibit the operation of a shared electric scooter system in Flushing. Over the summer, the Department of Transportation (DOT) implemented its Shared E-Scooter program across a large section of Eastern Queens, including the majority of the district represented by Councilmember Ung.

“Since the implementation of this program, my office has received a steady stream of complaints about dangerous operators and improperly parked scooters blocking sidewalks and entrances to businesses and homes,” said Councilmember Sandra Ung.

At last week’s Stated Meeting of the New York City Council, Councilmember Sandra Ung introduced two pieces of legislation aimed at improving public safety in the city’s parks and protecting the quality of life in residential areas. 

Intro 1010 would require the Department of Parks and Recreation to install cameras in parks to deter the illegal use of motor vehicles, which damages trees, destroys natural vegetation, and impacts the safety and enjoyment of other park users.

At its Stated Meeting on Thursday, the New York City Council passed legislation introduced by Councilmember Sandra Ung that would require the Department of Homeless Services to study the feasibility of partnering with community-based nonprofits to process shelter intake applications for homeless families. 

Currently, families in need of emergency shelter must travel to the Prevention Assistance and Temporary Housing (PATH) intake center in the Bronx, the only location that processes families with young children.

At the last Stated Meeting of the New York City Council on July 18, Councilmember Sandra Ung (D-Flushing) and Minority Leader Joseph Borelli (R-Staten Island) introduced bipartisan legislation requiring the NYPD to create a home vacancy program to protect property owners and their tenants from squatters who illegally occupy homes and claim legal residency. 

The program would include a registry for homeowners or tenants to provide notice to the NYPD that their dwelling will be vacant for 21 days or more.

Following the horrific sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in Kissena Corridor Park, Councilmember Sandra Ung convened a meeting with local elected officials and representatives from various city agencies to discuss ways to improve public safety in the park.

Some of the measures discussed include increased police patrols, fast-tracking capital improvement projects intended to make the park more vibrant, additional NYPD cameras around the park, and emergency call buttons along secluded trails.

Approximately one month before the Department of Transportation (DOT) intends to allow three private companies to deploy up to 6,000 e-scooters on the streets of eastern Queens, Councilmember Sandra Ung was joined by fellow community leaders to state their opposition to the expansion of the E-Scooter Share program in Flushing.

“I have been clear with the DOT since this proposal was first presented to me over a year ago: expanding this program to Flushing is a mistake,” said Councilmember Sandra Ung.

Councilmember Sandra Ung was joined by NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donaghue and Assistant Chief Christine Bastedenbeck of Patrol Borough Queens North in Kissena Park on Monday to denounce the destruction of 300 recently planted trees, as well as ask for members of the public to come forward with any information that could help identify those responsible. 

“Over the past week, either someone or a group of individuals has taken it upon themselves to excavate land to create what appears to be a well-planned track, destroying 300 recently planted trees in the process,” said Councilmember Ung.

The City Council on Wednesday voted to approve a new 696-seat elementary school in Councilmember Sandra Ung’s district.

“This vote is a commitment to providing a quality education and shaping a brighter future for our children,” said Councilmember Sandra Ung. “This new school will enable our children to thrive both academically and personally, and I look forward to welcoming the first group of students into a brand new, state-of-the-art learning facility.”

The new school will be built on a nearly 70,000-square-foot vacant lot at 137-31 45th Avenue in Flushing.
