Councilmember Sandra Ung recently visited PS 162 in Fresh Meadows to swear in the new members of the school’s Student Government. While there, the Councilmember announced that she secured $162,000 in this year’s budget for technology upgrades at the school.

Earlier this month, Councilmember Ung announced a $1.075 million allocation she secured to fund upgrades to the auditorium at P177Q The Robin Sue Ward School, a District 75 school located in her district.

As she prepares to begin her fourth year in office, Councilmember Sandra Ung delivered her third annual State of the District address at Glow Cultural Center on December 11. The Councilmember touched on some of the accomplishments and challenges of 2024, while outlining her goals for the coming year. 

“The annual State of the District address is an opportunity to connect with the residents of our community, share the progress we’ve made together over the past year, and outline my vision for what we can achieve in the year ahead with their continued support,” said Councilmember Sandra Ung.

At Thursday’s Stated Meeting of the New York City Council, Council Members Sandra Ung and Keith Powers introduced a resolution in support of legislation to protect access to fertility treatment, including IVF, that was introduced in both houses of the United States Congress earlier this year. 

Also known as the Access to Family Building Act, S.4445/H.R.9643 would provide a statutory right to access fertility treatments, including making decisions without limitations or interference regarding the use of their reproductive genetic materials, including embryos.

Councilmember Sandra Ung continued her annual Thanksgiving tradition of giving back to the community by hosting her largest Turkey Giveaway to date. This year, 526 turkeys will be distributed to local community groups, nonprofits, food pantries, NYCHA residents, and constituents, ensuring families across the district can enjoy a warm Thanksgiving meal.

This week, Councilmember Sandra Ung introduced legislation that would require the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP), or, where applicable, the Department of Small Business Services (SBS), to notify local community boards and Councilmembers within five days of any stoop line stand license application being filed. Stoop line stands allow businesses to display merchandise on sidewalks in front of their stores within defined parameters and guidelines.

Councilmember Sandra Ung met with Department of Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch in downtown Flushing on Friday afternoon to discuss the sanitation issues facing the busy retail corridor and major transit hub.

Councilmember Ung has made addressing the rampant unlicensed vending in downtown Flushing a priority since taking office in 2022. In part through her advocacy, the Adams administration reversed a de Blasio-era transfer of vendor enforcement to the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, a civilian-staffed agency with approximately ten enforcement agents for the entire city.

On October 9th, Councilmember Sandra Ung joined NYC Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue, and NYC Parks Queens Borough Commissioner Jackie Langsam to announce a total of $11.9 million in City Council capital funding in Fiscal Year 2025 to complete an additional section of the Eastern Queens Greenway in Fresh Meadows. 

“We are fortunate in Eastern Queens to have a number of amazing parks, but they remain disconnected from one another across much of Queens,” said Councilmember Sandra Ung.

Councilmember Sandra Ung issued a formal letter to the owner of a building located at 35-06 Parsons Boulevard demanding immediate action to address years of neglect. The building, which is located on the same block as the Flushing High School campus in an otherwise thriving residential and retail community, has fallen into extreme disrepair, with broken windows, boarded-up doors, and graffiti covering its façade.

Councilmember Sandra Ung introduced a resolution in the City Council calling on Congress to pass legislation that would extend a program to reimburse Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits stolen through the skimming of Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards. 

“SNAP is a lifeline for families who are already struggling to put food on the table, but when their benefits are stolen they are left with a devastating choice to either go hungry or fall behind on rent, utilities, or other bills to afford groceries,” said Councilmember Sandra Ung.

 Councilmember Sandra Ung thanked the Department of Sanitation and New York Police Department for their enforcement actions aimed against unlicensed and unlawful street vending in Flushing. The enforcement comes just days after Councilmember Ung hosted representatives from both DSNY and NYPD on a tour of downtown to discuss the need for ongoing enforcement of unlicensed vendors and brick-and-mortar businesses that violate stoop stand line regulations.
