(FLUSHING) Councilmember Sandra Ung thanked the Adams Administration and NYPD leadership for listening to her request to assign additional police officers to the 109th Precinct. The 109th Precinct received 12 new police officers at the end of 2022, and an additional 15 officers in February.
“While there has been an uptick in crime across the city, the surge in the 109th Precinct was particularly troubling given our large immigrant population and the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes,” said Councilmember Sandra Ung. “These new officers will be a major component in our efforts to reduce crime and make Flushing and the rest of the 109th Precinct safer. I remain committed to working with the NYPD and City Hall to fight for resources for our community.”
In December, Councilmember Ung and her colleagues in government sent a letter to Mayor Eric Adams calling on his administration to direct the New York Police Department to assign more police officers to the 109th Precinct to address the alarming uptick in crime over the past year.
“Our community is still reeling from the surge in Anti-Asian hate crimes,” the letter read. “Throughout the pandemic, friends and neighbors were afraid to let their parents walk outside. Now they open the papers on a daily basis to see a surge in violent crimes concentrated in Flushing. In order to ensure our city remains on the path towards recovery, and especially with the holiday season around the corner, we must tackle this crime wave head on.”
The letter was co-signed by Congresswoman Grace Meng, Borough President Donovan Richards, State Senators John Liu and Toby Stavisky, and Assembly Members Nily Rozic, Ed Braunstein, and Ron Kim.
