“I’m thrilled by the news that yet another Federal Court has found the Defense of Marriage Act to be an indefensible assault on our civil liberties.

Edie Windsor’s suit seeking a refund of the federal estate tax paid by the estate of her late wife is a stark reminder that the benefits and security of marriage have yet to be extended to all people. I want to thank Edie Windsor for waging a brave and courageous fight for justice.

I also want to thank Robbie Kaplan, James Esseks and others who have worked so hard to overturn DOMA. We celebrate and salute their tireless efforts.

This decision is proof that our movement for equality is building momentum. America is on the cusp of meaningful change. Soon, DOMA will be nothing more than a distant, shameful memory and I thank everyone who has brought us to this moment.”
