“I’m pleased that the Administration has responded to calls from the City Council, and residents and elected leaders on Staten Island and around the city, and agreed to withdraw the RFP for a waste-to-energy plant at Fresh Kills. As the City pursues new technologies to reduce waste, we cannot afford take one step backwards towards the bad old days of Fresh Kills Landfill. My colleagues and I had urged the Administration to withdraw the current RFP, and expressed real concerns about what specific waste-to-energy methods may be considered anywhere in the five boroughs, particularly thermal technologies. Ultimately, any such facility would have to go through the Council’s Uniform Land Use Review Process, and I can assure New Yorkers that we will not consider any proposal that threatens the environmental rights of any community.”
