CITY HALL – Continuing to add to her growing team, Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito announced today that Erica Gonzalez will join the City Council as a Senior Advisor. In her role, Gonzalez will work to find new and innovative ways for the Council to interact with the public and to enhance overall engagement with New Yorkers.

“I am thrilled to join Speaker Mark-Viverito and the team she’s assembled as we work to help make New York City a better place for everyone,” said Gonzalez. “I am looking forward to rolling up my sleeves on behalf of the people of our City.”

Prior to joining the Speaker’s office, Gonzalez was at El Diario/La Prensa, where she was Executive Editor and prior to that its Opinion Page Editor. She also worked as Director of Communications for the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs under the Bloomberg Administration.

For seven years, Erica Gonzalez served at El Diario/La Prensa, first as its Opinion Page Editor, then as Executive Editor. While there, she wrote hundreds of hard-hitting editorials on policy issues such as criminal justice and immigration reform, and led the paper’s groundbreaking multimedia project, “Sept. 11 – the Latino Experience.” Her professional experience includes working as Director of Communications for the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs under the Bloomberg Administration and a stint reporting at the New York Post. Erica is the daughter of a retired NYPD lieutenant, and a caregiver. She graduated from Brooklyn Tech H.S. and earned her degrees in political science and journalism from Syracuse University and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY.
