Immigration Program to be Activated Citywide May 15th

City Hall – Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, together with Committee on Immigration Chair Council Member Daniel Dromm, Council Members Melissa Mark-Viverito, Ydanis Rodriguez and Helen Diane Foster, along with Make the Road New York, Chung Wha- Hong of the New York Immigration Coalition, Jose Calderon, President of the Hispanic Federation, and a number of immigrant advocates, gathered today to demand the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) halt the activation of Secure Communities in New York City until the program is significantly reformed.

Citywide Outreach Effort to Raise Community Awareness and Involvement
One Police Plaza, NY– Speaker Christine C. Quinn, New York City Police Department Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence Commissioner, Yolanda B. Jimenez, George Fertitta, CEO of NYC & Company and Council Members gathered today to unveil a public service campaign that will focus on increasing reporting of domestic violence.

For too long, this symbol of the West Side has been in a state of disrepair, endangering the health of all those who live inside. “The EarlyLearn provider contracts announced by the Administration for Children’s Services has unacceptable changes to the City’s publicly funded child care system. While the City Council is in full agreement with the goal of enriching early childhood education, the implementation and funding of EarlyLearn is deeply flawed.

The EarlyLearn contracts have 6,500 fewer spots – a 13 percent cut for subsidized child care.

City Hall, NY-Speaker Christine C. Quinn and Minority Leader James Oddo today announced eight appointments to the Districting commission. The five appointments of the Council’s Democratic Caucus will join three appointments of the Council’s Minority Caucus. The Districting Commission meets once every ten years following the decennial census. Based upon changes in the population of the City, Council district lines are redrawn to accommodate shifts in population within the City.

Bill strengthens and increases protection for women who seek abortion related services

City Hall, May 2, 2012 – Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, along with Council Members and local elected officials, gathered today, the day after Lobby for Life Day in Albany, to publicly express their support of the state’s Reproductive Health Act. The Reproductive Health Act, sponsored by Assembly Member Deborah Glick and State Senator Andrea Stuart-Cousins, fixes a troubling gap in New York State law that prohibits providing abortion care to a woman if she experiences serious health complications late in her pregnancy.
