Legislative Package Reforms How NYPD & Court System Apply Nuisance Abatement Laws

NEW YORK – New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, along with Council Members Vanessa Gibson, Corey Johnson, Mark Levine, Ritchie Torres, Karen Koslowitz, Daniel Garodnick, Barry Grodenchik, Rafael Salamanca, Donovan Richards, Stephen Levin and Jumaane Williams today announced the introduction of the Nuisance Abatement Fairness Act (NAFA), a package of legislation to reform New York City’s Nuisance Abatement Law (NAL).

City Hall – Today the New York City Council will vote on legislation that would increase transparency within the New York City Police Department by requiring the NYPD to publish its patrol guide online. Additional legislation would require the NYPD to enhance its current hate crime reporting to increase the frequency of reporting and demographics analyzed within the reports.

City Hall – New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Governmental Operations Committee Chair Ben Kallos, Minority Leader Steve Matteo and Council Members today reminded New Yorkers to register to vote and to  indicate their party affiliation by the deadline, October 14th, in order to be eligible for voting in the November 8th Presidential Election. In addition, New York City voters must also register with a party by October 14th in order to vote in party primaries for the 2017 elections.

NEW YORK –  Today, New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito along with Councils Members Mark Levine, Rafael Salamanca, Eric Ulrich, Margaret Chin, I. Daneek Miller and  Julissa Ferreras- Copeland announced the introduction of the Street Vending Modernization Act  (SVMA), legislation that will reform street vending in New York City and create new enforcement tools. The SVMA will be introduced at the October 13th City Council Stated meeting.

City Hall, NY –  New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and General Welfare Committee Chair Steve Levin announced today that on October 31st the City Council will conduct an oversight hearing examining how the City responds to allegations of child abuse and neglect.  After numerous overhauls of ACS over the years, and in the wake of the recent death of six year old Zymere Perkins, the hearing will examine how policies and procedures at ACS affect the investigation of alleged abuse and neglect cases.

“It is disappointing that the Supreme Court has denied the Obama administration’s request to rehear the DACA/DAPA injunction. These programs would have shielded millions from deportation and kept families together. Now, families across the nation are kept in limbo, unsure of their futures. This is an unsustainable status quo. New York City will continue to lead the way locally on immigration but it is clear that Washington must act, and soon on comprehensive immigration reform.

City Hall – Today the New York City Council will vote on legislation that creates a wide range of reforms at the Department of Correction, including requiring the utilization of innovative techniques in interacting with needy inmates, establishing due process in determining admission to the Department’s nursery program, requiring all criminal defendants to undergo a medical screening before arraignment, streamlining procedures for obtaining inmates’ health information, and enhancing oversight of inmates with mental health issues and programming offered to Department of Correction inmates.
