New York— “We applaud and thank Governor Alejandro García Padilla and his administration for choosing to be on the right side of history in terms of marriage equality. His change of position is heartening. Puerto Rican LGBT families should be afforded the same rights, responsibilities and respect as the rest of the families. We would also like to thank San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz and Senate President Eduardo Bhatia, as well as several senators and representatives, for favoring marriage equality and this change of position. We now look forward to a favorable decision from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in the marriage equality case under its consideration. The right to marry should be afforded to everyone no matter where you live or whom you love.”

Background

Puerto Rican Secretary of Justice César Miranda filed a brief today to the effect of not defending the ban on marriage for LGBT couples in response to the appeal at the First Circuit Court of Appeals in the case Conde-Vidal v. Garcia-Padilla. This, after the U. S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico dismissed in October 2014 the lawsuit seeking to end the Commonwealth’s discriminatory ban on marriage for LGBT couples.
