Statement by City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn:

“I am disheartened by the International Olympic Committee’s decision not to hold a minute of silence at this year’s opening ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of the killing of 11 Israeli nationals at the 1972 Munich Olympics. News that the IOC has observed a minute of silence in the athlete’s village is a step forward, but it does not go far enough to properly remember the victims of that horrid act of terrorism.

“A minute of silence at the Olympic opening ceremony would send a strong message of tolerance and peace to the world. The New York City Council fully understands this and will be demonstrating our support for the people of Israel and victims’ families by observing a minute of silence at our Stated meeting this Wednesday, July 25, 2012.”
