“Two years ago, the City Council voted overwhelmingly to authorize negotiations with Verizon; allowing them to enter the cable television market in New York and offer FIOS service to all New Yorkers. Verizon made a commitment at that time to keep, maintain and expand thousands of good-paying, union jobs in New York City. FIOS is now offered in many parts of the City and Verizon has benefitted financially.

“Now Verizon must keep its promise and assure New Yorkers that they are a good corporate citizen. These good-paying, union jobs are a central part of what makes New York City a vibrant, thriving, and attractive place where people want to make their homes and raise their families. Verizon’s customers need reassurance that that their payments will not result in jobs being outsourced.

“In today’s difficult economic times these jobs should stay in New York. I demand that Verizon keeps its promise and keep these jobs in our City.”
