In response to the First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro’s announcement that low-income New York City families applying for childcare would be put on waitlists indefinitely following the proposed $350 million state allocation for childcare vouchers, New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and Council Member Justin Brannan released the following statement.
“Just days after proclaiming to have the ‘best budget ever,’ Randy Mastro and the mayor seem willing to give up on New York City’s working families in the face of adversity. It’s the wrong approach and we will always fight for children and families in our city. They deserve leadership that ensures continued access to childcare vouchers that support their children, our economy, and the retention of families in our city. State and city officials must work towards a solution rather than preventing families from accessing care. With the state budget outstanding, there can be no excuses to provide the funding necessary to supporting the thousands of families whose access to childcare is at risk.”
