Earlier today, the Mayor’s Charter Revision Commission released its preliminary report, which explores proposals related to housing production. In response, the New York City Council released the following statement from spokesperson Benjamin Fang-Estrada.

“Any changes to the City Charter to confront our city’s housing crisis must reflect the vast and diverse housing challenges that New Yorkers face. Under the leadership of Speaker Adams, this Council has approved the creation of 120,000 new units of housing through the land use process and its role has secured critical benefits for New Yorkers and neighborhoods, from childcare to domestic violence and community services. This report conveniently omits the role a mayoral administration can play in politically interfering in the creation of new housing, as the mayor’s recent delay of the Elizabeth Street Garden housing project approved six years ago by the Council underscores. We will further review this preliminary report from the Mayor’s Charter Revision Commission.”
