Today marks an historic and momentous turning point for the people of Northern Ireland. We in the United States, who have been firm supporters of the peace process, are delighted to celebrate today’s agreement. The transfer of policing and justice powers from London to Belfast will create peace and stability that lasts and will form a critical groundwork for a prosperous future in Northern Ireland. It is my privilege to salute and thank Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Taoiseach Brian Cowen, First Minister Peter Robinson, and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness on their triumphant efforts and thank all the peacemakers responsible for reaching this consensus. Our future successes are mutually dependant on one another. New Yorkers have always shared a special relationship with the people of Northern Ireland. Today, they find hope and inspiration in the perseverance that has brought us to this milestone in the North.”
