While we have come along way in the struggle for equality, the brutal murder of Edgar Garzon is a painful reminder that we must continue to stand up against ignorance and hatred in any form.

I want to thank the prosecutor, Karen L. Ross, for her work in this case. This conviction is a testament to the idea that anyone who commits a crime motivated by hate or bias will be punished to the full extent of the law. It shows once again that our City sees diversity as its greatest strength.

The death of Edgar Garzon will forever remain a tragedy. And while this conviction will not bring him back to his friends and family, I hope they can find some solace in the knowledge that justice has been served.
