I am honored to be reappointed as Chair of the City Council Health Committee, and want to thank Speaker Menin for her leadership and dedication to public health and equity. We have worked closely together over the years, and this reappointment reflects our shared understanding of both the urgency and complexity of making sure that healthcare is accessible and affordable to all New Yorkers.
During my tenure as Chair, I have been proud to champion legislation that takes a proactive, prevention-focused approach to public health — from passing legislation to create the first citywide diabetes prevention program, to requiring the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to develop a long-term population health agenda, and strengthening cooling tower testing requirements to protect New Yorkers from Legionnaires’ disease among other achievements. All of this work has produced meaningful results, particularly helping to increase life expectancy five years ahead of schedule through HealthyNYC.
This progress demonstrates what is possible when the City Council leads with a commitment to health,
equity, and affordability. I am honored to continue this work alongside Speaker Menin and my colleagues,
and I look forward to building on these efforts to ensure New York City is the healthiest city in the
country.
