Forest Hills residents can once again participate in sustainable waste management in their own neighborhood.

Following a pause due to budget constraints, the Big Reuse Community Composting Program in MacDonald Park officially launched to the public on Sunday, after Councilmember Lynn Schulman (D-Forest Hills) restored its funding.

Community members may bring food scraps, such as fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds and eggshells, to the Forest Hills Greenmarket every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The waste will be processed into compost, which will help nourish the city’s farms, gardens and green spaces while keeping organic matter out of landfills.

“As Chair of the City Council’s Committee on Health, I know that sustainability and public health go hand in hand,” Schulman said in a press release. “I was so glad to be able to restore funding for this vital program, which will empower Forest Hills residents to make a real impact on our environment and ensure that community composting remains accessible to all.”

The city also offers curbside compost collection.
