I’m deeply troubled that New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) employees launched a so-called ‘working group’ focused on foreign political issues—during work hours and using city resources—while New Yorkers face serious and urgent public health challenges at home.
We are in the midst of a health crisis in this country: health care costs continue to skyrocket, preventable and eradicated diseases are re-emerging, vaccination rates are slipping, and too many families are struggling to access basic care. DOHMH should be singularly focused on protecting and improving the health of New Yorkers—not advancing political narratives unrelated to its mission.
This incident is especially troubling given the alarming rise in antisemitism we are seeing in New York City, including multiple antisemitic incidents reported in recent weeks. Hosting a meeting that promotes inflammatory accusations while ignoring antisemitism entirely only deepens division and alienates Jewish employees and residents.
City employees are public servants, and with that comes a responsibility to use taxpayer-funded time and resources appropriately. Politicizing a public health agency undermines trust, morale, and the core mission of the department.
As Chair of the City Council Health Committee and Vice Chair of the Jewish Caucus, I take seriously my responsibility to ensure that DOHMH remains focused on its core mission of protecting public health. I have spoken with the DOHMH about this incident, and am very glad to learn an investigation is underway. City agencies must not use taxpayer-funded time or resources to advance divisive political agendas. I will continue to hold the Department accountable to serving all New Yorkers with professionalism, fairness, and respect.
