NEW YORK – Today, the City of Yes for Housing Opportunity plan received approval from the Council’s Subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises and Committee on Land Use, setting the plan on a path to be voted on by the full Council in early December. Council Member Keith Powers released the following statement on the plan:
“For decades, we simply have not built enough housing to keep up with demand. Without enough homes to house the people who live here, we have seen rents soar, vacancy rates plummet, and opportunity decline. The result is New Yorkers who are leaving New York, searching for housing they can afford.
We can change that. And we must. By adjusting our zoning regulations, City of Yes aims to create a large amount of new housing stock in a generation-defining investment that will drive down rents and build a sustainable future for years to come.
As a result of long negotiations and public feedback, we have a plan that both responds to community concerns, while upholding our goal to give New Yorkers a place to call home. I am deeply grateful to everyone that worked overtime in the last few weeks to make this happen.
We must pass the City of Yes – or become a city of yesterday.”
