New York City Council Majority Leader Keith Powers Announced $28 Million in Capital Funding for East Side Schools, Parks, Libraries

As part of the FY23 budget, Council Member Powers has secured millions in investments for District 4

New York, NY — Today, New York City Council Majority Leader Keith Powers announced capital funding allocations for Council District 4 as a part of the 2022-2023 budget. These local funding initiatives will boost recovery in Manhattan and across the East Side by investing in schools, parks, hospitals, libraries, cultural institutions, and more. 

“I’m very proud to have delivered 28 million dollars for my community on the East Side for the 2022-2023 budget season,” said Council Member Keith Powers. “Every year, I am committed to prioritizing our neighborhoods’ parks, schools, libraries, hospitals, and cultural institutions—everything that keeps District 4 safe, healthy, and vibrant.”

Council Member Powers is allocating significant funds to 13 of our public schools, supporting projects that will strengthen the quality of education on the East Side. This includes:

  • A new hydroponic science lab at The River School
  • Library and technology upgrades at PS 6
  • Interactive whiteboards and theater improvements at the High School of Art and Design
  • Renovations to Wagner Middle School’s gymnasium
  • Auditorium and stage curtains at MS 104
  • Electrical advancements at PS 40 and Salk Middle School
  • Playground renovations at Hunter College Campus Schools and PS 116
  • Stage and window curtains for Simon Baruch School
  • Technology improvements at PS M169, the SPECTRUM School, PS 77, PS 267, and PS 59, along with funding from Mayor Adams for a new green roof at PS 59

Along with these investments, the Council Member has dedicated substantial funding to our city’s higher education system and local arts and cultural institutions, such as: 

  • Audio visual upgrades to public venues at the CUNY Graduate Center
  • Campus beautification efforts and a performing arts hub at Hunter College 
  • Investments in arts and cultural curriculum across schools
  • Upgrades at our city’s central arts institutions like the Guggenheim, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Natural History Museum 

Council Member Powers has also prioritized the East Side’s parks and public spaces by devoting considerable investments to:

  • New tree plantings across the district to beautify the community
  • A fitness room at Asser Levy Recreation Center
  • New York Public Library branches across District 4

And lastly, to ensure the community stays safe and healthy, the Council Member has also dedicated funding to Bellevue Hospital, specifically supporting replacements to their pediatric ultrasounds.
