Sunnyside – On Friday, October 20, New York City Council Member Julie Won was joined by P.S. 150 Principal Carmen Parache, school staff, members of the PTA, and students to celebrate $2,850,000 in funding for much-needed upgrades to the school’s auditorium and schoolyard. Following advocacy from the P.S. 150 community, the Council Member secured a total of $2 million in funding to upgrade the outdated auditorium. The Council Member also allocated $850,000 from her capital funding for schoolyard upgrades.

P.S. 150 has been a beloved neighborhood school in District 26 since its inception in 1932. Following Council Member Won’s school visit in 2023, Principal Parache flagged the school’s need for general schoolyard upgrades, including more accessible equipment in the schoolyard, and upgrades to the auditorium, which include replacing the worn-out curtains and chairs and upgrading the air conditioning system. Since being elected, Council Member Won has continued to prioritize P.S. 150 and all District 26 public schools in the budget. The Council Member allocated $3,500,000 in FY ‘23 and $6,973,000 in FY ‘24 for new capital investments in schools across the district.

“Our students deserve schools that are modern and safe to nurture their development. I’m thrilled to announce $2,850,000 in funding for P.S. 150 for much-needed auditorium repairs and schoolyard upgrades for our scholars,” said Council Member Julie Won. I will continue to prioritize capital funding for improvements to all of our schools, especially focusing on upgrading our oldest schools to compete with newer schools opening across the city. Thank you to Principal Carmen Parache, the P.S. 150 PTA, and parents for your advocacy.”

“The P.S. 150 community is incredibly grateful for Council Member Won’s partnership to improve our school for current and future students. As an educator, I know the importance of ensuring the best education for our students. It is also necessary for them to have an updated building where they can feel excited about learning,” said P.S. 150 Principal Carmen Parache. “Our teachers, parents, and students have called for these improvements for years, and we are happy to see them coming to fruition.”
