Council Member Joseph C. Borelli (R-South Shore) has announced the allocation of nearly $3.5 million in funding for Staten Island schools through his office. The funds will go toward a number of new projects and upgrades for a majority of the elementary schools in the Council Member’s district.
The enhancements will include upgrades to the electrical systems in PS 58, PS 53, and IS 7, which will allow the school buildings to accommodate climate control systems and newer technology;

Council Member Joseph Borelli (R – South Shore) has introduced legislation this month that would compel the New York City Department of Information Technology and Telecommunication (DoITT) to study the issue of 9-1-1 calls made from mobile phones being routed incorrectly to 9-1-1 dispatchers in New Jersey. DoITT would be required to submit a report to the New York City Council detailing the findings of their study and potential action(s) to be taken to correct this issue and mitigate incorrectly routed 9-1-1 calls.

Councilman Joseph Borelli (R-South Shore) and Council Minority Leader Steven Matteo (R-Mid Island) are asking the Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education to explain the circumstances that led to the recent finding of contaminated drinking water at eight public schools on Staten Island. In a letter addressed to Chancellor Carmen Fariña, the two public officials sought clarification as to how these buildings tested positive for elevated levels of lead in their drinking water even though lead based equipment was removed and lead based service lines were replaced at public school buildings almost a decade ago.

Council Member Joe Borelli (R-South Shore), and Minority Leader Steve Matteo (R-Mid Island), announced today that he will be introducing legislation to establish a NYC-resident parking permit that would make it more difficult for out-of-state commuters to park for free at Park and Ride lots owned, operated, or maintained by NYC DOT. Non-residents would have the opportunity to purchase a parking permit for a $400 annual fee that would allow them to leave their vehicles in the same Park and Ride lots, residents will be able to obtain their permits at no cost.

Council Member Joseph Borelli (R – South Shore) is working with Verizon over constituent concerns relating to 911 calls placed on the south shore of Staten Island. Earlier this month, Borelli’s district office had fielded an inquiry from a constituent that was involved in a car accident in Tottenville; when the constituent called 911 to report it, the call was routed to 911 dispatchers in New Jersey, potentially delaying the response time and adding a layer of confusion to an already stressful situation.

Borelli (R-South Shore) announced today that a construction company’s lease on NYC Parks’ property at Ida Court and Drumgoole Road East will end this spring, after a period in which the construction company will remove their heavy equipment and debris from the site. Councilman Joseph Borelli (R – South Shore) and Minority Leader Steve Matteo (R – Mid Island) have written to the Board of Corrections in support of Department of Corrections Commissioner Ponte’s plan to delay the ban on solitary confinement for inmates ages 18-21. Additionally, they are asking the Board to wholly reconsider the ban, and to instead reform punitive confinement policy in a way which achieves reduction goals but preserves the ability of the Department of Corrections to utilize solitary confinement for the system’s most violent and non-compliant prisoners.
