NEW YORK — Council Member Farah Louis (D-Brooklyn), issued the following statement after Russia invaded Ukraine early Thursday morning.

STATEMENT BY COUNCIL MEMBER LOUIS

On Thursday, our worst fear was actualized when Russian military forces launched a series of attacks on Ukrainian military and civilian assets across the nation. As New Yorkers, we support our Ukrainian neighbors – both here and abroad – in the fight to preserve the sovereign nation, its independence from Russia, the right of self-determination, and the freedom and future of its people. The ramifications of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s act of aggression will affect all of us, resulting in preventable deaths, destruction, and displacement of millions who want to play no part in a war between brothers and sisters. This is not just a violation of international law, it is a violation of basic human rights. Such barbaric actions are not befitting of the 21st century. We are on the cusp of a humanitarian crisis and must remain firm as allies against these attacks intended to destabilize Ukraine. As global citizens, regardless of national origin, we must stand in solidarity to push for a peaceful resolution and a return to order. Ukraine, its golden fields and clear blue sky, its people, who have suffered through countless calamities, must remain free.
