FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BRONX, NY – The City of New York Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has announced that beginning the week of November 29, curbside composting will be provided to eligible residents in Kingsbridge and Riverdale. Collection day and start date will be announced to eligible residents at a later date.

After the initial announcement of the rollout, the office of Council Member Eric Dinowitz was told that there were no eligible community boards for the program in District 11, due to the district not meeting DSNY’s sign-up requirements. In response to this, Council Member Eric Dinowitz promptly met with DSNY to learn more about this decision, and then immediately engaged in an organized effort to achieve the number of sign-ups needed for the community boards in District 11.

“I am beyond thrilled to learn that curbside composting is coming to Kingsbridge and Riverdale. This is a result of robust outreach from our office to get more residents to sign-up, persistent community engagement, and strong advocacy to the Department of Sanitation,” Council Member Dinowitz said. “When DSNY announced the return of this program earlier this year, the intricacies of the sign-up process were unclear. Our office worked closely with the agency, environmental advocacy groups, community boards, and through our own social media channels and emails, to inform our community about curbside composting. We will continue to perform community outreach to expand eligibility to every corner of the district.”

“Bravo! Organic recycling is an incredibly important program that reduces our waste stream to landfill, while producing rich soil for our parks. Curbside composting has long been a priority of our Environment and Sanitation Committee,” said Laura Spalter, Chair of Community Board 8.

Sherida Paulsen, Chair of the Riverdale Nature Preservancy said, “We are grateful to Council Member Dinowitz and so appreciate his efforts to bring curbside compost pickups back to our neighborhoods. His office went the extra mile for us, holding outreach events and advocating for this community to expand sustainable actions for our future!”

“Advocates for composting have Council Member Dinowitz and DSNY to thank for bringing curbside recycling to Bronx neighborhoods. BCEQ supports community composting as a vital step toward the soil reclamation and green space that Bronxites urgently need,” said Robert Fanuzzi, President, Bronx Council for Environmental Quality.
