Council Member Christopher Marte has represented Lower Manhattan in the City Council since 2022. He serves as the Chair of the Subcommittee on Landmarks, Public Sitings, Resiliency, Dispositions and as co-Chair of the Black, Latino, Asian Caucus.
Born and raised on the Lower East Side, Marte experienced the impacts of gentrification first-hand as it forced his father’s bodega to close and many of his family members to move away. He left behind his career in finance after the Black Lives Matter movement started, and got involved in community organizing. As he watched his neighbors continue to get displaced by real estate developer-backed policy, Marte decided to run for City Council.
As Council Member, Marte has been at the forefront of fighting against displacement and exploitation. He has helped thousands of tenants halt illegal evictions and get repairs in their apartments, while working to open new 100% affordable housing. Marte has cracked down on rampant wage theft in the home care industry, and champions legislation to end the 24-hour shift. He has been a consistent advocate to protect municipal retirees’ healthcare. As developers continue to make unprecedented attacks on the affordability of our city, Marte has continued to fund public housing and stood with tenants against privatization.
