Mount Sinai Health System is accelerating its plan to close the Beth Israel hospital on the Lower East Side — drawing criticism from elected officials, residents and hospital staff who say the community depends on the hospital’s services.
The health system had already shared a plan with the state health department in late October saying it would close the medical center in July 2024 and gradually reduce its capacity leading up to that date.

The state Adult Survivors Act created a one-year window in which people could bring civil sexual assault lawsuits, even decades after the alleged conduct occurred and after the applicable deadline for filing a claim had expired.

“Following flash floods that brought the city to a halt in late September, a new bill was introduced in the City Council last week to ensure that landlords distribute flood evacuation plans to their tenants.
The legislation would require building owners to deliver the evacuation protocols to residents when they sign a lease, and maintain instructions on what to do in the event of a flood “in a common area of the building” for everyone to see.

In August, Mayor Eric Adams called for a new proposal to close Rikers Island while reiterating his opposition to the current plan. It seems less than two months later he has got his wish.
City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams announced on Friday that she would be bringing back the Independent Rikers Commission – which laid out the initial plan to close Rikers – to craft a new plan to close the infamous city jail as the administration lags behind its scheduled August 2027 deadline to shutter Rikers’ gates.
