Mayor Eric Adams called on the City Council Tuesday to revisit the plan to close Rikers Island.

The current court-mandated deadline to close the jail is August 2027.

Adams pushed back against the current proposal to move to a borough-based jail system, citing the rise in population and costs.

This all comes as a potential federal takeover of the jail complex continues to play out in court.

Since the start of the year, eight detainees who were in city custody or recently released from custody have died.

Councilwoman Carlina Rivera, who represents the neighborhoods of East Village, Gramercy Park and the Lower East Side, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Wednesday to talk more.

She is also chair of the council’s committee on criminal justice.
