New York, NY — In response to yesterday’s fatal helicopter crash along the Hudson River, New York City Council Majority Leader Amanda Farías released a statement calling for swift and serious action to address the ongoing risks posed by non-essential helicopter traffic in New York City.

“Today’s helicopter crash along the Hudson River is a devastating tragedy, and my heart goes out to the families who have lost loved ones,” said Majority Leader Farías. “I extend my deepest gratitude to the NYPD, FDNY, and first responders whose swift and courageous actions prevented further harm.”

As Chair of the Council’s Committee on Economic Development, Majority Leader Farías has been a leading voice in efforts to reform the city’s helicopter industry. She has consistently raised concerns about the safety, environmental, and quality-of-life impacts of non-essential helicopter flights, particularly those departing from city-owned heliports.

For years, she has worked alongside community partners like Stop the Chop NY/NJ, the NYC Economic Development Corporation, heliport operators, and safety advocates to push for stronger oversight and accountability. Her leadership has included convening oversight hearings and advancing legislation, including Intro 26, which would ban non-essential helicopter flights from city-run heliports unless they are fully electric.

“In light of this tragic incident, we must take urgent and bold action,” said Farías. “I am calling for a serious reevaluation of current policies and am urging the city to consider an immediate moratorium on non-essential helicopter flights from city-owned heliports while investigations are ongoing. Public safety must come as our first priority.”
