Marie Reed was very active with the Soundview Presbyterian Church and James Monroe houses for over 40 years. With the church, she served on the Christian Education Committee, the Soundview Presbyterian Women Gills Committee, the Scholarship Committee and the choir. She did outreach for sponsors for the church’s day camp for kids who were not able to afford it. She served on the Christian education committee for over 30 years and helped raise money for the church’s scholarship fund for high school seniors to attend college. She also arranged block parties and Halloween parties. She served as the night center director for the James Monroe community center for a few years. She provided food for the homeless in the Hunts Point Market and took youths on field trips around the City.
“Today we were able to celebrate and honor the legacy of the late Mrs. Marie Reid, beloved Soundview community member, mother, grandmother, philanthropist, and church member, with a co-naming ceremony on the corner of Soundview Avenue and Lafayette Avenue.” said Amanda Farías, “This corner is right next to the church that she helped service for more than 40 years and was a corner she passed every Sunday. That’s why it’s so special to have her recognized right here where she would have been most recognized. Having her family and the community she worked with at the ceremony has been an honor. Thank you to the family of Marie Reid for all the work you put in to get to today and the Department of Transportation for working with my office to make this very special street co-naming a reality.”
