At today’s Stated Meeting of the New York City Council, District 22 Council Member Tiffany Cabán introduced the first part of the “Light of Day” package of legislation, consisting of two reporting bills aimed at bringing transparency and accountability to the criminal legal system.
“All too often, we give our institutions of policing and incarceration unquestioning deference, even when they conceal the outcomes of programs they claim are data-driven,” said CM Cabán.

Neary 3,000 total District 22 residents or students, ages 11 and up, cast votes as part of the 2022 Participatory Budgeting effort led by the office of Council Member Tiffany Cabán.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the thousands of neighbors who came together in this inspiring exercise of direct democracy,” said CM Cabán. “No one knows the needs and hopes of our community better than the community itself, and the winning initiatives could not be more worthy, exciting, and meaningful.”
With $1 Million in capital funding and $50,000 in expense funding at stake, Cabán announced that the following initiatives received the most votes, and would be receiving the funding they need from her City Council office.

Joined by Deputy Speaker Diana Ayala at today’s New York City Council Stated Meeting, Council Member Tiffany Cabán introduced a bill designed to remove bureaucratic impediments to homeless New Yorkers finding housing, and save the city money in the process.
At issue is the “shopping letter” that New Yorkers receive once the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) deems them eligible for a housing voucher to rent an apartment or single-room occupancy (SRO).

Anyone age 11 or older who lives or attends school in New York City Council District 22 can vote on how the office spends over $1 Million – “the people’s budget.” They’ll have until Sunday, April 10th to cast their vote.

At today’s Stated Meeting of the New York City Council, Council Member Tiffany Cabán (District 22), introduced a Resolution calling on Albany not to renew the “Free Billions for Developers” 421-a Tax Credit, a program which is slated to expire this year.
Created in 1971, the program cost New York City $1.7 Billion in forgone revenue in 2021, making it the single biggest tax break in the New York State budget.

Standing alongside a small group of friends and family members, Tiffany Cabán was officially sworn in as Council Member for the 22nd Council District, becoming the first woman, first Latina, and first Queer person to represent the district. The office was vacated when former Council Member Costa Constantinides resigned in April of 2021.
Immediately after being sworn in, Cabán signed on to co-sponsor 20 pieces of legislation to improve the lives of New Yorkers across the five boroughs.
