Today, Council Member Tiffany Cabán, Comptroller Brad Lander, and a large coalition of labor unions, community-based organizations, and more launched a campaign to pass INT 0837-2022, the “Secure Jobs Act,” which would ban employers from terminating employees without just cause.

The bill would require employers to give workers advance notice of termination and a written explanation of their firing and give workers fired without a good reason the opportunity to appeal the decision and be reinstated.

The Mayor has already made $469 Million in cuts to our schools that we continue to battle to restore, and this Budget Modification cuts an additional $75 Million. He has already forced agencies to slash their budgets again and again through so-called “PEGs,” which cut working New Yorkers off from the services they need and deserve, and from which the NYPD was exempt.

At today’s Stated Meeting of the New York City Council, the “Support Survivors” legislative package, introduced by Council Member Tiffany Cabán, Chair of the Committee on Women and Gender Equity (W&GE), passed by a vote of 45-6.

In its hearings this session, W&GE has heard from scores of courageous survivors, who have told the committee their painful stories and urged the Council to take action to meet their needs.

Yesterday, New York City Council Members Tiffany Cabán and Sandy Nurse made an unannounced visit to Rikers Island. The visit came amid a sweltering heatwave, about which advocates have been sounding the alarm, and in the immediate wake of reporting that Dashawn Carter, one of 11 New Yorkers to die in DOC custody so far this year, missed nearly 100 clinic appointments at Rikers before dying in May.

Ahead of the introduction at today’s City Council Stated Meeting of a resolution 257 declaring solidarity with workers organizing unions across the city, resolution lead sponsor Council Member Tiffany Cabán and colleagues joined the courageous worker-leaders spearheading New York’s current surge of union organizing for a rally under the banner “New York Is A Union Town.”

Today, a brand new coalition of elected officials and advocates are launching “Care For All Families,” a campaign to win at least $10 Million in New York City’s FY23 budget to expand access to publicly-subsidized early childhood education and care for undocumented children excluded from the City’s contracted programs and vouchers.
