BRONX, NEW YORK — On Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Council Member Pierina Sanchez shared the following statement on the New York City Department of Transportation’s Fordham Road proposal:

“Every day, more than 130,000 riders depend on buses along Fordham Road to get to work, school, medical appointments, and home to their families. Improving bus speeds along this chronically congested corridor is essential,” said local Council Member Pierina Sanchez.

“That is why I appreciate the Department of Transportation’s continued focus on improving service along Fordham Road. At the same time, as I’ve shared directly with the Department, City Hall, and at community meetings, I remain concerned that reintroducing parking to a roadway that has operated without it for nearly two decades will reduce available travel space and create additional conflict among buses, pedestrians, delivery vehicles, cyclists, and drivers in one of the busiest transit corridors in New York City. I have encouraged the Department to prioritize improvements that strengthen bus operations, including wider bus lanes, painted medians, and targeted loading zones. At a minimum, any curb access should be limited to carefully managed loading, unloading, and passenger drop-offs with short, strictly enforced time limits.

I look forward to DOT closely monitoring these changes, measuring bus speed improvements in real time, and adjusting wherever the data shows they are needed. Fordham Road is simply too important to get wrong, and I remain committed to working with the Department to ensure this corridor moves people more efficiently, supports local businesses, and serves the Bronx as effectively as possible.”
