NEW YORK — Today, the New York City Council’s Progressive Caucus, the Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus, and the Homes Can’t Wait Coalition held a press conference to reiterate the coalition’s demand to City Hall and Council leadership to deliver significant CityFHEPS expansion in the FY27 budget.

“Since becoming Chair of the Housing and Buildings Committee, I have called for New York to confront the housing crisis in its full complexity — not only as a crisis of affordability, but as one of housing quality, safety, and survival. Mayor Mamdani’s first housing plan reflects that reality, embracing the all-of-the-above approach this moment demands: building new housing, preserving existing homes, protecting tenants — including in NYCHA — and confronting distressed buildings where neglect is putting lives at risk,” said Council Member Pierina Sanchez.

“This morning, a tragic fire at 2264 Grand Avenue in the Bronx claimed the life of a New Yorker and injured several others. Our hearts are with the victim’s loved ones and all impacted residents.
This afternoon, we were on the ground speaking directly with residents. While we recognize that the severe winter storm strained emergency response efforts citywide, we were concerned by the lack of clarity and coordination we observed upon arrival — particularly around how information was communicated to us and to residents, many of whom were unsure whether their apartments were safe to occupy.
