Following Mayor Mamdani’s appeal in the ongoing CityFHEPs litigation, NYC Council Member Pierina Sanchez, Chair of the Committee on Housing and Buildings and lead sponsor of Local Laws 101 and 102 of 2023 shared the following:

“Every New Yorker deserves a stable, dignified place to call home—and the City’s decision to continue Adams administration’s appeal is a direct failure to deliver on that basic responsibility. After promising to drop this lawsuit, Mayor Mamdani is now choosing to continue blocking relief for families who need it most.

Since the Council passed these laws, more than 42,000 evictions have taken place—an estimated 25,000 of which could have been prevented. That means tens of thousands of families pushed into crisis unnecessarily. A working mother expecting her third child facing eviction. A senior choosing between rent and food. A family of four stuck in shelter for years, their children commuting hours each day just to get to school.

CityFHEPS is one of the most effective tools we have to keep families housed and move people out of shelter, and every day this appeal continues, more families are harmed. I remain at the table and ready to reach a resolution—but the City must reverse course. We should not be litigating against relief that has already been affirmed as lawful, while New Yorkers continue to suffer the consequences.”
