In response to the New York City Council filing its opposition to the Adams administration’s motion for leave to appeal in the ongoing CityFHEPS litigation, Council Member Pierina Sanchez, Chair of the Committee on Housing and Buildings and lead sponsor of Local Laws 101 and 102 of 2023, released the following statement:
“In July, the Appellate Division issued a unanimous, decisive ruling: the Council has the authority to expand CityFHEPS, and the Adams administration has the duty to implement these laws. Yet, instead of moving forward to help thousands of New Yorkers secure stable housing, the administration continues to stall by seeking another appeal.
The Council is opposing this motion because the courts have already spoken clearly. The Council’s opposition makes clear: this case has already been thoroughly reviewed and resolved. There is no need for further appeals, only for swift action to expand voucher eligibility and remove discriminatory barriers — exactly as Local Laws 101 and 102 of 2023 require.
We will not stop holding this administration accountable until these laws are enforced and our neighbors get the housing assistance they deserve.”
