Why Was North Shore NYC Created?
The North Shore has long been the focus of bold ideas and ambitious plans, reflecting the tremendous potential of this community. North Shore NYC is about building on that momentum and turning vision into action by creating vibrant neighborhoods, strengthening commercial corridors, expanding housing opportunities, and improving connections to the waterfront. Together, we have an opportunity to shape a North Shore where residents can build a life today and the next generation can afford to stay.
What Do We Hope to Achieve?
Our goal is to build on the work already underway while creating a clear path forward for the North Shore’s future. We want to unlock opportunities for new housing, support local businesses, activate vacant and underutilized sites, and create walkable neighborhoods that reconnect residents to the waterfront. Thoughtful growth must go hand in hand with investment in transportation and infrastructure, while preserving the residential communities that make Staten Island special. By planning for both, we can expand affordable housing opportunities for people at every stage of life and help the North Shore thrive for generations to come.

HOLISTIC NEIGHBORHOOD PLANNING Considers the needs of existing residents, such as schools, while
planning for new neighbors.

DYNAMIC URBANISM Makes the most of existing assets by framing views and creating a sense of place, introducing new amenities and the people that will help sustain them.
Project Area
The study area focuses on the North Shore waterfront and surrounding neighborhoods, from St. George through Tompkinsville and Stapleton. It includes key commercial corridors such as Bay Street, underutilized waterfront sites, and areas with strong transit access that are well positioned for thoughtful growth. Together, these areas have the opportunity to become a more connected, vibrant Downtown Staten Island—a welcoming place to live, work, and visit.
