Council Member Joseph Borelli (R – South Shore) has introduced legislation this month that would compel the New York City Department of Information Technology and Telecommunication (DoITT) to study the issue of 9-1-1 calls made from mobile phones being routed incorrectly to 9-1-1 dispatchers in New Jersey. DoITT would be required to submit a report to the New York City Council detailing the findings of their study and potential action(s) to be taken to correct this issue and mitigate incorrectly routed 9-1-1 calls.

Council Member Joseph Borelli (R – South Shore) is working with Verizon over constituent concerns relating to 911 calls placed on the south shore of Staten Island. Earlier this month, Borelli’s district office had fielded an inquiry from a constituent that was involved in a car accident in Tottenville; when the constituent called 911 to report it, the call was routed to 911 dispatchers in New Jersey, potentially delaying the response time and adding a layer of confusion to an already stressful situation.
