Except in rare emergencies, NYC correction officers will no longer be allowed to use pepper spray to protect themselves or inmates on Rikers Island and other Big Apple jails, under a “reckless” new bill being considered by the City Council.

Far left Democratic Councilwoman Sandy Nurse’s legislation would require correction officers to first get authorization from tour commanders before firing “high-powered oleoresin capsicum sprays” — better known as pepper sprays – on out-of-control detainees.

An accused cop shooter who claimed a Venezuelan gang is smuggling guns into migrant facilities stayed at a shelter with a X-ray and magnetometer to scan for weapons, officials said.

Security guards at the East Elmhurst shelter have been “retrained” on the proper use of handheld wands and scanning belongings since former resident Bernardo Raul Castro Mata, 19, allegedly shot two NYPD officers, city officials told The Post.

New York City voters in November could have the power to repeal “misguided and dangerous” “sanctuary city” laws that severely limit the NYPD’s ability to cooperate with the feds on immigration matters and are a clear “threat to public safety.”

Joe Borelli (R-Staten Island), Robert Holden (D-Queens) and six other members of the City Council’s “Common Sense Caucus” fired off a letter this week to a newly-appointed Charter Revision Commission, asking it to put a referendum question on the ballot to determine whether to roll back the “sanctuary” laws that help criminals avoid deportation.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New York City will now provide FDNY emergency medical services (EMS) personnel with body armor and self-defense training every three years after Mayor Eric Adams signed two pieces of legislation Wednesday.

Both sponsored by City Councilman Joseph Borelli (R-South Shore), the pieces of legislation require the FDNY to provide body armor, along with self-defense and de-escalation training every three years to all members working in the EMS bureau.

FDNY Emergency Medical Services workers will have access to body armor and special training as part of legislation passed Thursday by the City Council to address an increase in attacks on first responders.

The pair of bills, authored by Minority Leader Joseph Borelli, would require the FDNY to provide EMTs and paramedics with bullet- and stab-proof armored vests along with self-defense and de-escalation training.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — It appears part of a new strategy from Mayor Eric Adams’ administration to deal with the large influx of migrants coming into New York City is to use vacant Department of Education properties as temporary housing.

The former Richard H. Hungerford School on Tompkins Avenue in Clifton saw its first wave of migrant arrivals Sunday evening as the city searches for options to house new arrivals in the five boroughs.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A trio of Staten Island elected officials sent a letter last week calling on the NYPD to bring more police officers to Staten Island from parts of the city where leaders have called to “defund the police.”

City Council Minority Leader Joseph Borelli (R-South Shore), City Councilman David Carr (R-Mid-Island), and Borough President Vito Fossella sent the letter to Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell on Thursday calling for more cops locally as crime surges in their home borough.
