Council Member Francisco Moya honored newly-retired Telemundo 47 news anchor Jorge Ramos with a proclamation from the City Council on Wednesday for his unparalleled career and nearly half a century of service to communities the world over.

CITY HALL, NY — Council Member Francisco Moya presented former Telemundo 47 news anchor Jorge Ramos with a proclamation from the City Council on Wednesday in recognition of an unparalleled career.

“Jorge Ramos occupies a rarified air in journalism and is a unique treasure for Latino communities everywhere,” Council Member Francisco Moya said. “For nearly 50 years, Jorge conducted himself with integrity, compassion and a sense of urgency that endeared him to his audience. He reported stories that were critical to millions of Americans, documented or not — stories that often went under-reported or overlooked by other news outlets. I am grateful for all he has given in service to the public and it’s a personal honor to recognize Jorge’s distinguished career.”

Mr. Ramos began his media career in 1972 at the radio station WKVM in Santurce, Puerto Rico. In 1979, he became a founding member of Telemundo 47, joining the station as it’s first field reporter. Mr. Ramos went on to host influential segments like “Crímenes sin Resolver,” which led to several arrests, including for a 10-year-old cold case. Then in July, August and September, with Mr. Ramos anchoring the 11 p.m. edition of Noticiero 47 Telemundo, the program became the most-watched local newscast in the New York-area, in either English or Spanish. Mr. Ramos has also dedicated more than three decades to working with several non-profit organizations. As the father of a veteran, he is advocates for Hispanic veterans and their return to civilian life.

On Friday, Mr. Ramos signed off for the final time, capping off a remarkable and distinguished broadcast career.

“This was a day that I will always remember,” Jorge Ramos said. “The kind words from the New York City Council and the members of our community were incredibly humbling. I am grateful to Speaker Corey Johnson, Council Member Francisco Moya and the leadership of the City Council for making today so special for myself and my family. ”

“Jorge Ramos is a pillar of our community and an important trailblazer in New York broadcast journalism,” said Cristina Schwarz, President and General Manager of Telemundo 47. “On behalf of his Telemundo 47 family, I would express our heartfelt congratulations to Jorge on today’s well-deserved honors.”

Mr. Ramos was joined at Wednesday’s ceremonial tribute by his wife Yolanda Ramos, his daughter Alejandra Ramos — who is also a TODAY show contributor, food and lifestyle expert, blogger, and on-camera host — Speaker of the New York City Council Corey Johnson and members of the NBC 4 NY and Telemundo 47 family.
