Sandy Nurse has represented the 37th District in the NYC Council since 2022, covering Bushwick, Brownsville, Cypress Hills, Cityline, and East New York, and has been re-elected twice since.
In the Council, Sandy has passed meaningful legislation on climate, housing, and workers’ rights.
As Sanitation Chair, she shepherded the landmark Zero Waste Act, which included curbside composting and a goal of achieving zero waste by 2030. She pushed through the Public Solar Bill to place solar panels on city-owned property with union labor, is championing the fight for Renewable Rikers, and secured a $390 million sewer upgrade to finally address Bushwick’s chronic flooding.
On housing, she passed the Rent Transparency Act to alert tenants about rent-stabilized units in their buildings and is leading the fight to pass the Community Opportunity to Purchase Act, which puts community organizations first in line to buy at-risk buildings and keep neighborhoods affordable before speculators swoop in.
Last year, she helped increase the minimum wage for Instacart workers and secured an additional 32 hours of protected time off for over 4 million New York City workers. She also championed public bathrooms, with a goal of getting New Yorkers 2,100 public toilets by 2035.
