“The Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA) Act is not a promise for Puerto Rico’s future – it’s an anti-democratic bill that will upend the way of living in Puerto Rico as we know it. There can be no economic growth in Puerto Rico until the debt is restructured. Period. There are some elements of that in this bill, but not enough.

“I cannot and will not support a bill that imposes a fiscal control board in Puerto Rico. This legislation will prioritize the interests of the bondholders and not the people of Puerto Rico. Every day that goes by means more public services are shut down and that the health care crisis will continue to deepen. As we say in Puerto Rico, the people before the debt – it’s that simple.”
