During his tenure as a New York State Senator (1997-2002) and now as a NYC Councilmember, Vincent Gentile has been a consistent and persistent advocate for children and working families, the labor movement, senior citizens, and law enforcement in the City and State. As senator, he championed the repeal of the sales tax on clothing and shoes, led the effort to establish Universal Pre-K in our schools and was the impetus in expanding the NYS prescription drug program for seniors.
In the City Council, Gentile has brought millions of dollars of resources into his district for new capital programs for schools, parks, and libraries. As a former assistant district attorney (1985-1996), Mr. Gentile has a strong law enforcement record and last year led the drive to add $12 million to the City budget to purchase upgraded bulletproof vests for NYC police officers. In addition, he has been a leader in the Council on contextual zoning of neighborhoods, thereby preserving the residential character of communities. Gentile has engineered the largest to-date rezoning in Brooklyn, 249 blocks in Bay Ridge and last year added an additional 159 blocks in Dyker Heights. He has also led the City Council in advocating for comprehensive commuter ferry service in all five boroughs of New York City.
Councilmember Gentile heads a new subcommittee on libraries and in this role has led the way in baselining library funding and adding $42.7 million to the new budget to fund six-day library service in every library branch in every community throughout New York City. Under current law, Councilmember Gentile may stand for reelection to the City Council and serve through the year 2013.
