Council Member Domenic M. Recchia, Jr. was born in Brooklyn. He attended P.S. 215, David A. Boody Junior High School and John Dewey High School in Gravesend. He went on to earn a B.S. from Kent State University and a J.D. from Atlanta Law School.
Recchia's involvement with his community began very early. At John Dewey High School, he joined the Council for Unity, a national non-for-profit organization, promoting racial harmony through a network that links elementary schools, junior high schools, senior high schools and college chapters. As a member of the Council for Unity, Recchia stood out as a leader among his peers spreading the organization's core message of empowering individuals and groups with the skills needed to promote unity, diversity and safety.
After graduating from law school, Recchia returned to Brooklyn where he continued his activism and rejoined the Council for Unity as a graduate member and the District 21 liaison. In 1989, Recchia was elected to Community School Board 21. Throughout his tenure on the School Board, he served first as a member, then, vice-president and finally, as president. He supported programs that encouraged parental and student involvement as a means to achieving success. Further, he was instrumental in bringing a student exchange program to the schools in District 21. He also served as a member of Community Board 13.
In November 2001, in a highly contested race, Recchia was elected to the New York City Council from the 47th Council District. During his first term, he fought hard at City Hall to ensure that the services and programs most important to his constituents were funded and maintained. In November 2003, Recchia was re-elected.
Recchia lives in Gravesend with his wife, Kimberly and their three daughters, Brianna, Daniella and Juliana. Brianna and Daniella currently attend P.S. 215 and Juliana is in nursery school.
