Background Information
 Erik Martin Dilan is a lifelong resident of the 37th Council District, which comprises the communities of Bushwick, Cypress Hills, East New York, Ocean-Hill Brownsville and Wyckoff Heights. He was first elected to represent the people of the 37th District in November of 2001 and is currently serving his Third Term in office.

As a Member of the City Council, Erik Martin Dilan serves on the following committees: Housing & Buildings (Chair), Governmental Operations, Public Safety, Rules Privileges & Elections, State & Federal Legislation, and Public Housing. Erik also serves as the Co-Chair of the Brooklyn Delegation and is a member of the Council’s Black, Latino & Asian Caucus.

As Chairperson of the Housing & Buildings Committee, Erik Martin Dilan has made attempts to create Housing Laws and Policy that are balanced to both Building Owners and Tenants. Along with NYC Dept of Buildings, Erik has also spent much of his prior Term as Housing Chair focusing on Construction safety throughout the City.  Here are some legislative highlights from his previous Term (2006-2009):

• Worked with HPD on creating The Alternative Enforcement Program, to improve housing inspections and repairs.
• Continuing to support the rent-regulations programs by voting twice to continue the programs.
• Led numerous Housing & Buildings Committee hearings that passed legislation to increase safety throughout the City for supported and suspended scaffolds, tower cranes, and retaining walls at construction sites.

Erik’s priorities since becoming a Member of the Council have been to improve the infrastructure in the 37th Council District.  His effective use of the City’s Capital Budget in his first three terms has produced the following for the District:

• Allocated 4 Million dollars to completely renovate Irving Square Park and over 10 Million dollars to rehabilitate Parks across the District.
• Brought back over 1 Million dollars per year to Schools in the District for Computer Labs, Gym Renovations, Libraries, etc.
• 450K to NYPD Precincts 75th and 83rd for a NYPD Patrol Borough Brooklyn North Mobile Command Vehicle to better safeguard the District

Of Puerto Rican and African American descent, Erik was born on May 11th 1974 to New York State Senator Martin Malave-Dilan and Debra Dilan. His upbringing has provided him with the tools needed to be effective in government and lead him to become his father’s, Martin Malave-Dilan successor in the City Council.

A product of New York City Public Schools, Erik graduated from Norman Thomas High School, Philippa Schuyler Middle School and P.S. 151. Erik later attended St. John’s University where he received his Associate of Science in Business Administration.
 
Erik recently married his wife Jannitza and they have two children, Daniel and Lea.
