Erik Martin Dilan represents the people of the 37th Councilmanic District serving the communities of Bushwick, Cypress Hills, East New York, Ocean- Hill Brownsville and Wyckoff Heights. Erik Martin Dilan is a life long resident of the 37th Council District. First Elected to the City Council in November, 2001 Erik received 87% of the vote in the General Election. In November of 2003 he was re-elected to serve as a City Council Member with 90% of the vote and defeating his opponent in the Democratic primary by 69%.
As a member of the City Council, Erik serves on the following committees. Subcommittee on Senior Center (Chair), Aging, Economic Development, Parks, Public Safety and State & Federal Legislation. Twice, his fellow colleagues who make up the Brooklyn Delegation of the Council, elected Erik to serve as the Brooklyn Member of the Councils budget negotiation team. Additionally, Erik is a member of the City Council's Black, Latino & Asian Caucus.
During his first term in office Erik Martin Dilan has achieved many profound accomplishments on behalf of the people he serves, below are a few he is most proud of:
- Preventing the closure of Fire Squad 252 in Bushwick.
- 1.3 Million in Capital funds to expand Wyckoff Hospital s Emergency Room.
- 8 Million in Capital funds to renovate Ladder 112, Engine 277 Fire House and prevent is permanent closure.
- Over 1 Million dollars in Capital enhancements for school computers for schools within the Council District.
Born of Puerto Rican and African American decent, Erik was born on May 11th 1974 to Martin Malave-Dilan and Debra Dilan. Martin was his predecessor in the Council and is currently elected to the New York State Senate. He has two younger sisters, Melissa and Nicole. At the age of 29, Erik is the second youngest member of the City Council.
Erik Martin Dilan attended St. John's University where he received his Associate of Science in Business Administration. Erik attended New York City Schools, graduating from Norman Thomas High School, Phillippa Schuyler Middle School and P.S. 151.
Prior to becoming a member of the New York City Council, Erik Martin Dilan was a Member of Community School Board # 32. During his tenure as a Board Member Erik was part of a coalition with other Members of the Board, Parents, and Community organizations to fight privatization of Public Schools. Erik also served as a member of Community Board #4 in Brooklyn.
At a very young age Erik Martin Dilan became a civic leader in the North Brooklyn area. He volunteered his time at many community organizations to help revitalize the community, enhance the quality of life for seniors and youth and enhancing public safety. These ideals he continues work for on behalf of the people of his Council District, the Borough of Brooklyn and the City as a whole.
