{"id":59,"date":"2023-01-23T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-23T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/tiffany-caban\/?p=59"},"modified":"2023-01-30T17:13:58","modified_gmt":"2023-01-30T17:13:58","slug":"council-member-tiffany-caban-comptroller-brad-lander-and-large-coalition-launch-secure-jobs-nyc-campaign-to-ban-unfair-firings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/tiffany-caban\/2023\/01\/23\/council-member-tiffany-caban-comptroller-brad-lander-and-large-coalition-launch-secure-jobs-nyc-campaign-to-ban-unfair-firings\/","title":{"rendered":"<strong>Council Member Tiffany Cab\u00e1n, Comptroller Brad Lander, and Large Coalition Launch \u201cSecure Jobs NYC\u201d Campaign To Ban Unfair Firings<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, Council Member Tiffany Cab\u00e1n, Comptroller Brad Lander, and a large coalition of labor unions, community-based organizations, and more launched a campaign to pass <a href=\"https:\/\/legistar.council.nyc.gov\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=5958217&amp;GUID=44D72CEC-FE82-4A43-BA31-4BB15FBC15EB&amp;Options=Advanced&amp;Search=\">INT 0837-2022<\/a>, the \u201cSecure Jobs Act,\u201d which would ban employers from terminating employees without just cause.<\/p>\n<p>The bill would require employers to give workers advance notice of termination and a written explanation of their firing and give workers fired without a good reason the opportunity to appeal the decision and be reinstated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New Report<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the campaign launch, Data For Progress, in conjunction with Make the Road NY and the National Employment Law Project, released a brand study on the need for the bill. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.filesforprogress.org\/memos\/nyc_just_cause_secure_jobs.pdf\">Fired Without Warning or Reason: Why New Yorkers Need Just Cause Protections<\/a>\u201d contains several startling findings, including:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>60% of fired workers in New York City say their bosses gave them either no reason or an unfair or inaccurate reason for firing them.<\/li>\n<li>Nearly 90% of fired workers in New York City were given no warming.<\/li>\n<li>79% of workers in New York City support the adoption of the key provisions of the Secure Jobs Act.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Broad Coalition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cSecure Jobs NYC\u201d coalition includes a wide array of groups, from labor unions (<em>Amazon Labor Union, Teamsters Local 804 and UAW Region 9A<\/em>) to worker associations (<em>National Domestic Worker Alliance, Laundry Workers Center, Brandworkers<\/em>, and more) to community organizations (<em>Make The Road NY, Coalition for Asian American Children and Families, African Communities Together<\/em>, and more), to employer groups like <em>Hand in Hand: The Domestic Employers Network<\/em>, to political organizations like <em>Democratic Socialists of America\u2019s NYC Chapter<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The bill has the vocal support of <strong>Comptroller Brad Lander<\/strong>, who, when he was a Council Member, introduced and passed legislation granting \u201cjust cause\u201d protections to fast food workers, as well as <strong>Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/strong>, who was unable to join the launch in person.. Co-sponsors of the bill include Council Members <strong>Sandy Nurse<\/strong>,<strong> Shahana Hanif<\/strong>,<strong> Lincoln Restler<\/strong>,<strong> Charles Barron<\/strong>,<strong> Alexa Avil\u00e9s<\/strong>,<strong> Jen Guti\u00e9rrez<\/strong>,<strong> Christopher Marte<\/strong>,<strong> Chi Oss\u00e9<\/strong>, and <strong>Farah Louis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More Information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Footage of the launch can be viewed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SecureJobsNYC\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorkers are not widgets, inanimate objects to be extracted from and then disposed of at a moment\u2019s notice,\u201d said <strong>Council Member Tiffany Cab\u00e1n<\/strong>, the bill\u2019s lead sponsor. \u201cThey are people, and people deserve stability, security, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they won\u2019t be fired on the spot, without a reason or means of redress. This bill is about treating workers with dignity and respect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is disgraceful that working New Yorkers are forced to live under the constant threat of being fired for any reason, or no reason at all, with no warning, no explanation, and no recourse,\u201d said <strong>Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/strong>. \u201cArbitrary firings mean taking it all away, at a moment\u2019s notice: the ability to make rent, car payments, to afford medicine, food, childcare, and more. Workers keep our city afloat, and they deserve better.
