The office was vacated when former Council Member Costa Constantinides resigned in April of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Immediately after being sworn in, Cab\u00e1n signed on to co-sponsor 20 pieces of legislation to improve the lives of New Yorkers across the five boroughs. The bills include <a href=\"https:\/\/legistar.council.nyc.gov\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=4313327&amp;GUID=DF600BDA-B675-41D8-A8BD-282C38DC4C62&amp;Options=ID%7CText%7C&amp;Search=1867\">Intro. 1867-2020<\/a> which would establish municipal non-citizen voting rights, <a href=\"https:\/\/legistar.council.nyc.gov\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=4729243&amp;GUID=4BBC0DC6-2FA3-4A20-9D2E-8C884A3872BA&amp;\">Intro. 2173-2020<\/a> which would ban solitary confinement in city jails, <a href=\"https:\/\/legistar.council.nyc.gov\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=4425096&amp;GUID=E2F925C2-84A1-4B6D-9B72-25BE954DDD48&amp;Options=Advanced&amp;Search=\">Intro. 1926-2020<\/a> which would extend paid sick leave to misclassified gig workers, <a href=\"https:\/\/legistar.council.nyc.gov\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=4743790&amp;GUID=17816675-8D33-46D6-B1BA-71D8632CD109&amp;Options=Advanced&amp;Search=\">Intro. 2197-2021 <\/a>which would prevent city-owned land from being sold to for-profit developers, <a href=\"https:\/\/legistar.council.nyc.gov\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=4966519&amp;GUID=714F1B3D-876F-4C4F-A1BC-A2849D60D55A&amp;Options=Advanced&amp;Search=\">Intro. 2317-2020 <\/a>which would ban natural gas in new buildings and gut renovations, and <a href=\"https:\/\/legistar.council.nyc.gov\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=5072014&amp;GUID=C4487B7C-8916-4C24-A86C-FD376A3D55B5&amp;Options=ID%7CText%7C&amp;Search=2374\">Intro. 2374-2020<\/a> which would mandate smaller class sizes in New York City schools.
