{"id":250,"date":"2024-06-27T11:25:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-27T11:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/shaun-abreu\/?p=250"},"modified":"2024-06-27T15:48:34","modified_gmt":"2024-06-27T15:48:34","slug":"patch-goats-are-coming-to-west-harlem-this-summer-what-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/shaun-abreu\/2024\/06\/27\/patch-goats-are-coming-to-west-harlem-this-summer-what-to-know\/","title":{"rendered":"Patch: Goats Are Coming To West Harlem This Summer: What To Know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-york\/harlem\/goats-are-coming-west-harlem-summer-what-know\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Vianella Burns<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HARLEM, NY \u2014 One of the city&#8217;s beloved summer traditions, the Riverside Park goats, will return to the community in July, and this time they are coming to Harlem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joining the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/riversideparknyc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Riverside Park Conservancy<\/a>&nbsp;for their fifth summer, the goats are being assigned a new job site in Riverside Park at West 143rd Street, north of their previous location on 120th Street, where they will munch on poison ivy and other invasive plants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe goats\u2019 work at their previous location has been incredibly productive, and we\u2019re thrilled to be able to replicate their success in another weed-filled area of the park,\u201d said Merritt Birnbaum, President and CEO of Riverside Park Conservancy. \u201cThey truly have become Riverside Park Conservancy\u2019s mascots, and we\u2019re excited to introduce them to a new neighborhood \u2013 and a new all-you-can-eat buffet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The welcoming ceremony, aptly named &#8220;Goatham festival and ribbon-chewing&#8221; by the Riverside Park Conservancy, will take place on July 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the lawn north of Ten Mile River Playground at 151st Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ceremony is free to attend and will feature light refreshments, local vendors, live music, new Goatham merchandise and educational activities for all ages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The Conservancy is thrilled for the goats to bring their big appetites further uptown,&#8221; a Conservancy spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This summer, seven goats will be making the journey from Green Goats in Rhinebeck to the big city, including two returning goats, Chico and Mallomar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Goat fans may recognize Chico and Mallomar, both of whom were part of the Goatham Class of 2023.
