{"id":209,"date":"2024-05-20T20:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-20T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/shaun-abreu\/?p=209"},"modified":"2024-06-11T20:26:54","modified_gmt":"2024-06-11T20:26:54","slug":"amny-nyc-council-fights-to-keep-public-litter-basket-service-from-ending-up-in-the-trash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/shaun-abreu\/2024\/05\/20\/amny-nyc-council-fights-to-keep-public-litter-basket-service-from-ending-up-in-the-trash\/","title":{"rendered":"AMNY: NYC Council fights to keep public litter basket service from ending up in the trash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/news\/funding-cuts-nyc-litter-baskets-sanitation\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/politicsny.com\/2024\/05\/20\/nyc-council-fights-to-keep-public-litter-basket-service-from-ending-up-in-the-trash\/\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Barbara Russo-Lennon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Public litter basket service could be kicked to the curb if the Adams administration gets its way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NYC Council announced Monday it is calling for the restoration of funding to basic Department of Sanitation (DSNY) programs and services that keep the city clean ahead of an executive budget hearing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/district-7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Council Member Shaun Abreu<\/a>&nbsp;(D-Manhattan), chair of the council\u2019s committee on sanitation and solid waste management, along with others on the council, is urging NYC Mayor Eric Adams to restore funding for more&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/news\/nyc-trash-bins-dog-waste-bags\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">litter basket service<\/a>&nbsp;and citywide community composting programs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both programs were written as priorities in the council\u2019s preliminary budget response, but were left out of the mayor\u2019s FY25 executive budget, the city council said in a press release.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the council has historically negotiated one-time funding each year to support litter basket pickup service, the council feels the funding should just be there \u2014 baselined \u2014 since public trash collection is such a vital service, especially as the city battles a growing rat problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNew Yorkers are tired of leaving their apartment to be greeted by mountains of trash bags and swarms of rats on their street corner,\u201d Abreu said. \u201cWe can and we must do better, and the good news is it doesn\u2019t have to be this way.
