{"id":114,"date":"2023-02-21T05:05:00","date_gmt":"2023-02-21T05:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/shaun-abreu\/?p=114"},"modified":"2023-05-18T18:53:42","modified_gmt":"2023-05-18T18:53:42","slug":"the-city-tenants-friday-night-plans-testifying-at-curiously-timed-city-eviction-lawyer-hearing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/shaun-abreu\/2023\/02\/21\/the-city-tenants-friday-night-plans-testifying-at-curiously-timed-city-eviction-lawyer-hearing\/","title":{"rendered":"The City: Tenants&#8217; Friday Night Plans: Testifying at Curiously Timed City Eviction Lawyer Hearing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Read the full story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/2023\/2\/21\/23607832\/right-to-counsel-friday-night-hearing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By Sam Rabiyah<\/p>\n<p>While thousands of tenants face eviction cases without a lawyer, the government office that administers New York City\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/2021\/5\/20\/22444023\/right-to-counsel-expands-citywide-why-thats-a-big-deal-tenants-nyc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Right to Counsel<\/a>&nbsp;law has scheduled its required annual public hearing from 6 to 9 p.m. this coming Friday \u2014&nbsp;an unorthodox hour for public business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The meeting will be held online, reads the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/hra\/downloads\/pdf\/services\/civiljustice\/post-223-e-ocj-notice-of-hearing_rev.1_2023_8.5x11.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meeting notice<\/a>, \u201cDue to COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tenant groups accuse the Office of Civil Justice of discouraging participation. They had hoped to use the hearing to protest plunging rates of legal representation in Housing Court.<\/p>\n<p>Last fall, THE CITY&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/2022\/10\/27\/23425792\/right-to-counsel-housing-court-tenant-lawyers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;that fewer than 10% of tenants in eviction cases were getting assigned a lawyer, despite the law guaranteeing one for all low-income people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, poor pay has depressed the number of participating attorneys. On Tuesday and Wednesday, more than 250 attorneys, paralegals and other staffers with the New York Legal Assistance Group plan to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1nUgIlOBcjs8GL_50SQUH_s0MJ1Zg8LZ5\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">walk off the job<\/a>, demanding pay raises and a better union contract.
