{"id":789,"date":"2025-07-02T16:13:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T20:13:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/shahana-hanif\/?p=789"},"modified":"2025-08-05T16:18:01","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T20:18:01","slug":"brooklyn-pols-take-bold-stance-against-trump-pass-landmark-immigration-protections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/shahana-hanif\/2025\/07\/02\/brooklyn-pols-take-bold-stance-against-trump-pass-landmark-immigration-protections\/","title":{"rendered":"Brooklyn pols take bold stance against Trump, pass landmark immigration protections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brooklynpaper.com\/brooklyn-pols-landmark-immigration-protections-trump\/\">BrooklynPaper<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 By\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brooklynpaper.com\/author\/gabriele-holtermann-2\/\">Gabriele Holtermann<\/a> | Published July 2, 2025<\/p>\n<p>The City Council on June 30 passed three pieces of legislation aimed at protecting immigrants in the face of federal policies that have left many fearful and anxious.<\/p>\n<p>Two of those measures \u2014 a resolution and a bill \u2014 were introduced by Brooklyn politicians Sandy Nurse and Shahana Hanif, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The City Council also passed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/press\/2025\/06\/30\/2916\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Intro 205-A<\/a>, sponsored by Hanif, which addresses immigration legal services fraud, also known as \u201cnotario fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many immigrants are uncertain about their legal options to avoid detention and deportation. Unscrupulous crooks exploit that fear and anxiety by posing as immigration lawyers, often referred to as \u201cnotarios p\u00fablicos\u201d in Spanish-speaking communities.
